The Best Toys for Babies based on
their Age
It is important to provide the most appropriate toys
for your baby based on his/her age. For example, giving a 3 month
old a book does not really work:) Below is a listing of suitable
toys based on your babies age. Of course, your baby is an individual
who will progress at his/her own pace so if your little one is
not ready for a particular toy, do not push! Keep in mind these
are my own personal recommendations.
Zero to Three Months
Music -
Studies suggest that babies react to music even in utero.
The more complex the sound pattern, the more intense the brain
stimulation..
Mobile -
A moving mobile with contrasting colors can help babies
develop depth perception. The movement acts as a stimulus for
baby.
Rattle -
Babies love rattles, but make sure the sound is gentle.
A rattle teaches baby about consequences because when your child
shakes his/her rattle, noises are made.
Three to Six Months
Blanket ("Cuddly") -
A very small blanket can become a soothing reminder of
Mom! Make sure that you tuck it inside your shirt first so that
it will have your scent. This helps to reassure baby that you
are near.
Crib Mobile -
I know that I listed a Mobile in ages 0 to 3 months but
mobiles on your baby's crib can provide important stimulation
throughout the ages of 3 to 6 months also.. The moving shapes,
colors, and sounds help attract your baby's attention and teach
much needed eye focus skills, as well as entertain your little
one.
Baby Ball -
A ball especially made for a baby can help develop hand/eye
coordination and a close bond with Mom. Of course I recommend
our own handcrafted baby ball!
Safety Mirror -
Babies love looking at faces, even though at a very early
age they are unable to recognize themselves. Studies show that
by the age of 1 month, your baby recognizes you!
Six to Twelve Months
Stuffed Animal or "Lovie" -
This is the age that babies can get attached to a favorite
stuffed animal or blanket. This object can give a great deal of
comfort to your baby and help with life's transitions.
Shape Sorters -
This is a toy that helps with problem solving skills.
Baby tries to match up a round shape that goes in a round hole,
etc. If you find that your baby is getting frustrated, gently
help or guide them.
Books -
Books can open up worlds of possibilities for your baby,
so introduce them at an early age. There are lots of soft books
on the market today that help baby think and process information
without paper cuts!
This is just a brief summary of the best baby toys that will help your little one develop.
Every baby is different and, if you have any questions or concerns about your individual baby's development,
I recommend you contact your Pediatrician for advice.
